My freelance services include - but are not limited to - editorial advice, copy-editing, proofreading, developmental editing and critiques. I also recognise that every project is different, and every client has unique requirements, including budget. I aim to be as flexible as possible, offering bespoke services tailored to the needs of each project. I'm particularly interested in working with independent publishers and self-publishing authors.
Clients include: Titan Books, Influx Press, Dead Ink Books, Flame Tree Press, Unsung Stories, The History Press, Elliott & Thompson, Dodo Ink and Little Island Press.
I have worked as a freelance writer and editor for over ten years, writing fiction and non-fiction for print and online markets in the UK and the US. In September 2022, I won a British Fantasy Award for Writing the Uncanny, co-edited with Richard V. Hirst. I am a member of the Society of Authors, an Active Member of the Horror Writers' Association, and a Professional Member of the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading.
Each job is priced according to the author/publisher's needs and the stage the manuscript is at. However, the following gives an indication of my base rates for most jobs:
Proofreading: £5.50/1000 words
Copy-editing: £6.50/1000 words
Development: £7.50/1000 words
"I've worked with dozens of editors, copy-editors, and proofreaders, and Dan is definitely the best. His attention to detail is astonishing and his suggestions over less clear-cut aspects of the text were invariably spot-on."
- Tom Jeffreys, Author of Signal Failure (Influx Press)
